The Center of expertise on Antimicrobial Consumption and Resistance in Animals (AMCRA) in Belgium has launched a Vision 2020 Plan to reduce the use of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in animals. The plan consists of ten objectives and principles that are to be achieved by 2020. The vision statement defines the guidelines of the policy relating to the use of antibiotics and to antibiotic resistance among animals in Belgium. The 2020 plan is based around the central objective of a "50% reduction in the total consumption of veterinary antibiotics by 2020".

In the 4th ESVAC Report listing the sales of antibiotics for the various countries in Europe in 2012 compared with 2011, Belgium is in 6th place. AMCRA has been identified by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as the motor behind the fall in the sales in antibiotics in Belgium.

For the occasion of Antibiotic Awareness Day, november 18th 2014, AMCRA, the centre of expertise on antimicrobial consumption and resistance in animals, wishes to report on the most recent evolution which is part of the Vision 2020 plan of AMCRA. In particular, a first important step has been taken, due in part to the pioneering role of BELPORK, in order to achieve a global data collection system and data-analysis of antimicrobial consumption on the herd level.

The 5th BelVet-SAC report has been presented on 3 July 2014 and covers the results of the data collection on veterinary antibacterial consumption in Belgium in the year 2013. Analysis of the results has been performed by the faculty of veterinary medicine of Ghent University (Unit of Veterinary Epidemiology) under the authority of the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health products.  This report shows for the second year in a row a decrease in the total consumption of antibacterial compounds in veterinary medicine.

All AMCRA members/sectors developed a vision 2020. The AMCRA 2020 vision statement comprises 10 objectives and action points which will be specified in greater detail in cooperation with the relevant authorities and players involved.
